Photocopying

General Information

Self-service photocopy machines are available through a common photocopy program at most SULAIR libraries. Coordinate libraries (Hoover, Business [Jackson], Law [Crown], Lane Medical, SLAC) and department libraries (Classics, Philosophy [Tanner]) have their own copy card systems. Please contact those individual libraries regarding their policies.

Using a card

Most copiers only accept Stanford ID cards or copy cards using the StanfordCardPlan. (Note: patrons also need a card to print from microtext or public terminal printers.) A number of Cash-to-Card machines are available on campus to add value to existing Stanford IDs or copy cards. You may also purchase blank copy cards at these machines.

Using cash

Some libraries still accept cash in their copiers, in addition to StanfordCardPlan cards. These machines will take coins, $1 and $5 bills, and return change for the remaining unused balance.

These libraries are:

  • Biology
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Music
  • Stanford Auxiliary Library [SAL 1&2]

Note: regardless of payment type accepted by the copier, library loan desks do not provide change or smaller denomination bills for purchasing cards or making copies.

StanfordCardPlan Information

All card transactions use the StanfordCardPlan. The plan acts as a type of ATM, storing a balance which is accessible on the patron's card of choice. Stanford affiliated patrons who graduate or otherwise leave the university will have the funds refunded, but purchased copy cards retain their value. For further information, see the plan's Terms and Conditions.

You may use the StanfordCardPlan in the following way:

  • if you have a Stanford ID, simply add money to it, either at a Cash-to-Card machine or online, using Stanford ePay
  • if not, purchase a blank copy card for a dollar at a Cash-to-Card machine and then add money to it. Do not throw these cards away - they may be revalued.

Note: you must have a dollar bill ($1) to purchase a blank card. There is no value on the card until you add additional money

Stanford ePay

Stanford students may use the Stanford ePay service to add money to their StanfordCardPlan. Please see the ePay site for details on this.

Cash-to-Card machines

Individuals can purchase new copy cards or add money to new or existing StanfordCardPlan cards at Cash-to-Card machines.

Note: Cash-to-Card machines do not make change - any bill you use will be added to the value on your card. Please consider your copying needs carefully before deciding how much money to add to your card.

These machines are available at each of the following library locations:

Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Library
Engineering Library
Green Library, East Wing
