Access & Circulation

The Math/CS Library is open to all members of the Stanford community and is accessible to persons with limited mobility. An elevator on the first floor provides wheelchair access. Users who do not have a current barcoded University ID may qualify for access to the library's collections and facilities. For questions regarding access and borrowing privileges, consult with staff at the Math/CS Library circulation desk, (650) 723-4672.

Circulation policy

Circulation of materials is available only to users with a valid Stanford borrower's ID, corporate users with a SUL Science coupon, people who have purchased borrowing privileges, and to users with a University of California Library Reciprocal Services Card. Contact the Privileges Desk at sul-privileges@stanford.edu or at Green Library, (650) 723-1492, for information on obtaining a valid borrowers card.

Circulation period

Course Reserves : Varies from 2 hrs to 3 days
Permanent Reserves : Varies from 2 hrs to 7 days
Journals : One day
Books & Theses : 28 days
Technical Reports : 28 days
Reference : In-house use only
Videotapes : In-house use only

Books, theses and technical reports are subject to RECALL after one week if requested by another user. Fines for recalls are $3.00 per day. Fines for overdue journals and Permanent Reserve items are $1.50 per day. Fines for Course Reserves, however, are $1.00 per hour.

Materials can be returned to any library on campus EXCEPT for the Jackson Business Library, Lane Medical Library, and the SLAC Library. HOWEVER, recalls, course reserve materials and journals MUST BE RETURNED DIRECTLY to the Math/CS Library. To obtain more circulation assistance, call (650) 723-4672 or send e-mail to the Math/CS Library.

Renewals

Since some renewals can only occur during library hours, renew your books on or in advance of the due date.

Reserve items and journals can only be renewed in person. Reserve items and journals cannot be renewed by email or on the web. Books can only be renewed twice by email and on the web. Once this limit is reached, they must be returned or renewed at the library in person with book(s) in hand. The Math/CS Library does not accept renewals by phone.

There are now three ways you can renew books (which circulate for 28 days or longer) at the Math/CS Library:

  1. via the web (a maximum of two consecutive times); or
  2. by email (a maximum of two consecutive times); or
  3. in person.

Institutional borrowers can ONLY renew books IN PERSON with one coupon per book per renewal.

A book may NOT be renewed if:

  • Another patron has placed a hold or a recall on it.
  • The ID card is expired or is blocked.
  • The renewal limit has been reached (a maximum of two consecutive times).

How to Renew

Web Renewals

"My Account" is a web page that lets you see what materials you have checked out, any overdue items, paid and unpaid bills, and the status of any hold or recall requests you have placed. You can renew materials due within 14 days of their due date, and you don't have to wait a day to find out whether or not your books have been renewed. You must have both a SUNet ID and University ID to take advantage of this feature. Proxy Card records can't be viewed or renewed using this service. Note that this service does NOT include books checked out from the Jackson Business Library, Lane Medical Library, and the SLAC Library.

The URL for the web page (My Account) is:
http://library.stanford.edu/services/borrow_renew_request/my_circulation_records.html.

Once there, you are prompted for your SUNet ID and password. You can simplify the log-in process if you have PC-Leland or Mac-Leland installed on your computer. Links to My Account can be found on the SULAIR home page (http://library.stanford.edu) next to the "Search" button and at the top of the page while in the Socrates catalog.

There is also a link from the Math/CS Library page to My Account. You can find it under "About the Mathematical & Computer Sciences Library — Access & Circulation."

While the web page should make renewals easier for you, it won't work if you wait until you get a bill for an overdue book. At that point you will be stuck with a $5 non-refundable billing fee for each book, and you will not be allowed to renew the books. The above web page lets you look to see what you currently have checked out and when each book is due, so you should check it before you leave town for an extended period and return or renew any books that will come due while you are gone.

Always remember to LOGOUT and CLOSE the BROWSER WINDOW at the end of your sessiocn to keep your records confidential.

You are responsible for renewing items on or before the due date(s).

Questions? Feel free to contact any of the library staff.

Email Renewals

Send renewals to: mathcslib@stanford.edu BEFORE 12 Noon, Monday - Friday.

Submit:

  1. your full name,
  2. your Library ID number, the 9 underlined digits above the barcode of your current ID card,
  3. the barcode numbers of the books (found on the inside of the back cover, beginning 36105..., don't include the spaces when entering them in the form).

Once sent, please allow one business day for processing. Email requests for renewal are read Monday-Friday, 9am-Noon ONLY. Emails received after Noon and during times when the library is NOT open will not be processed until the next business day. ALWAYS wait for a response stating either a new due date or any complications preventing renewal. NEVER assume books have been renewed without confirmation!

In-Person Renewals

Bring:

  1. your valid ID card and
  2. the books
    or
  3. if you have not reached the renewal limit (2), a list of the barcode numbers of the books that you want to renew, with your full name and library ID number clearly printed at the top of the page.
